What is an EPQ?

The EPQ is a qualification worth up to 28 UCAS tariff points (equivalent to an A* grade) and is designed to develop skills in research, critical thinking, project management, and academic writing.

What does an EPQ involve?

Students choose their own topic and then:

1. Plan a project and set objectives.
2. Research using books, journals, websites, interviews, surveys, or other sources.
3. Create an outcome, such as:
   • A 5,000-word dissertation/report (most common).
   • An artefact (e.g., model, artwork, computer program) with a shorter written report.
   • A performance or event, accompanied by evaluation.
4. Keep a project log documenting progress and decisions.
5. Give a presentation about the project and answer questions.

Assessment

The EPQ is assessed on:

• Planning and management of the project.
• Quality and range of research.
• Analysis and evaluation of evidence.
• The final product or report.
• Reflection on strengths, weaknesses, and learning.
• The presentation.

Typical Timeline

An EPQ usually takes 120 guided learning hours and is completed over several months, often during Year 12 or Year 13.
