Construction has started on Perry Barr’s brand new secondary school, which will provide places for 1260 pupils.

Prince Albert Community Trust held the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday 30th January heralding the start of work on Prince Albert High School.

Students from Prince Albert Community Trust, staff, representatives from Birmingham City Council, Galliford Try and partners from across the city joined together to officially mark the beginning of construction on Perry Barr’s newest secondary school.

PA High will form part of the Prince Albert Community Trust, which currently oversees five primary schools in Birmingham. The school will be built across 4 acres and will provide 4,103sqm of teaching spaces including 32 traditional classrooms and 27 specialist learning spaces for subjects such as science, art, music, drama and technology.

A new four-court sports hall with changing facilities will also be connected to the main school building along with an outdoor floodlit multi- use games area (MUGA) which will provide shared sports facilities for the local community.

Perry Barr is benefiting from unprecedented levels of investment for the regeneration of housing, transport, public spaces, community assets and sports facilities. An ongoing regeneration scheme, which totals more than £500 million, comprises a fully integrated programme of works.

PA High is being delivered by the construction company Galliford Try, who joined the ceremony. Galliford Try were appointed by the Department for Education to deliver the new school.

Sajid Gulzar, CEO of the PACT, said: “This is a tremendous opportunity to provide a life-changing education for children in our community. We hope that the majority of our intake will be from our primary schools thus enabling us to educate our pupils from nursery through to A level. I would like to thank the parents and staff from our existing schools for their wonderful support for our new school. PA High will be innovative and high performing and will provide our young people with the best possible foundation for the future.”

Simon Burton, Managing Director for Galliford Try West Midlands, commented: “We are excited to be able to start work on what is such an important scheme for PACT and the children of the area. Galliford Try has a strong track record of delivering high-quality educational buildings and we look forward to working with all the stakeholders involved to ensure that Prince Albert High School is a facility we can all be proud of.”

The school plan to open its doors to pupils and staff in September 2021 and will be accepting applications for places in Year 7 from September 2020.
